What is CourseNotes for Mac?
CourseNotes is an application created by Dear Panda, and allows students to quickly and easily keep their class notes organized.

What can I do with the app?
CourseNotes allows students to:

  • Keep all of your school notes organized and in one central location
  • Organize your notes into multiple subjects and note sessions
  • Track assignments and Tests
  • Manage ToDo lists
  • Sync your notes with CourseNotes for iPad
What’s a Quick Note?
The Quick Notes subject is a place for you to quickly jot down some notes without having to create a new subject.

You can write a new quick note by creating a new session inside the quick note subject. You can also type Command-Shift-N to start add a new quick note.

How do I search all of my notes?
  1. Place your cursor in the search box in the bottom bar of the app.
  2. Type a search term and hit “enter”. This will bring up a list of results.

Note: Search terms are saved so that you can refer to them again later.

Can I search in just one session?
Absolutely, just use the search bar in the session header:

  1. Click inside of the search box in the session header and start typing
  2. As you type matches found in the note session will be highlighted

Exporting Notes

How do I export notes?
  1. Navigate to the session you’d like to export
  2. In the app menu, select File > Export to HTML…
  3. Select a destination and click “Export”

Syncing

Can I sync my notes with my iPad?
Yes! But you’ll need CourseNotes for iPad. If you don’t already have it you should download now on iTunes!

How do I sync my iPad with my Mac?
  1. Make sure that you are logged into the same iCloud account on all devices
  2. Make sure that “Documents & Data” syncing is enabled in your system iCloud settings (and for CourseNotes in particular)
  3. Click the “cloud” icon in the left¬†toolbar and enable cloud syncing
  4. Repeat this process on all devices you wish to sync with.

Working with Subjects

How do I add a new subject?
  1. Click the add button (+) in the bar at the bottom of the app.
  2. In the resulting dialog, type the name of the subject and choose an icon that best represents it. The subject icon will appear in the list of subjects with the subject name.
  3. You can also add an instructor name and web address to each subject
How do I edit the details of an existing subject?
  1. Choose a subject from the Subjects List.
  2. Click the “Edit Subject Details” button to the right of the subject details. Alternatively you can also control-click the subject in the subject list and choose Edit Details… from the menu.
  3. Make changes in the resulting dialog and click “done”.
How do I delete a subject?

Note: Deleting a subject will also delete all corresponding sessions and notes!

  1. Choose a subject from the Subjects List
  2. Push the delete key. Or you can also control-click the subject and choose delete from the menu.

Working with Sessions

How do I add a note session?
  1. Choose a subject from the Subjects List.
  2. Click the “New Note Session” button to the right of the subject details.

You will automatically be taken into the notes view when you create a new session.

Can I edit the name of the session?
Yep! Sessions automatically get named with the current time and date. However you can edit the name of any session:

  1. Choose a subject from the Subjects List.
  2. Double click the session you’d like to edit from the list of session contained in the subject.
  3. Click the name of the session in the header bar and type the new name of the session.
How do I delete a session?

Note: Deleting a session will also delete all corresponding notes

  1. Choose a subject from the Subjects List.
  2. Choose the session you’d like to delete from the list of sessions in the subject.
  3. Push the delete key. Or you can also control-click the session and choose delete from the menu.
  4. Make changes in the resulting dialog and click “done”.

Working with Notes

How do I add a note?
An empty note is added to every new session created. To add more notes to a session you can do any of the following:

  • Click the “new note” button in the toolbar.
  • In the app menu select File > New Note
  • Type Command-N
What can I do with a note?
Type! To begin typing a note just place the cursor into a note and start typing. Within a note you can also:

  • Add images.
  • Assign due dates.
  • Create bulleted lists (outlines)
How do I add images to my notes?
Place your cursor in a note to reveal the note specific action buttons on the right. To add an image:

  1. Click the “paperclip” icon in the note toolbar.
  2. Browse to the image you’d like to add on your computer.
  3. Click “open”
How do I assign a due date?
Place your cursor in a note to reveal the note specific action buttons on the right. To assign a due date:

  1. Click the “calendar” icon in the note toolbar.
  2. Choose a day and time.

Assigning a due date to a note will automatically add it to your Todo List.

How do I delete notes?
Place your cursor in a note to reveal the note specific action buttons on the right. To delete a note:

  1. Click the “trash” icon in the note toolbar. Or you can type the “delete” key.
